Park Hill History

The portion of Denver now called Park Hill began as land owned by the Baron Allios Gillaume Engine von Winckler. In 1898, Baron von Winckler allowed the Colorado National Guard to camp on his land in order to help in the war against the Spanish. Over 1,400 troops stayed in the 32 acres owned by him.

In 1900, the first Park Hill homes were offered for sale, and in the 1950s, the Dahlia Square Shopping Center was built in Northeast Park Hill. During this time, Dahlia Square was considered by many to be the center for commerce in the Park Hill area, featuring a number of shops and businesses.

Though Park Hill had fallen into decline in recent decades, today, the area is back on the upswing. Purchased in 2005 by Parkhill Community Incorporated, commissioned by the Denver Urban Renewal Authority (DURA) to help revitalize the area, the area is quickly evolving with a growing sense of community pride. The Park Hill community has launched a Youth Jobs Program to help adolescents find summer employment, and on a monthly basis publishes the Greater Park Hill News, a free newspaper outlining community news and area events, such as the annual homes tour held in the fall.

Once finished, the redevelopment is expected to have close to 90 single-family homes, 40 senior-housing apartments, and 55 affordable-income apartments, all offering Park Hill residents the opportunity of a dream come true.
